As an integral part of World Dynamics, this course will follow the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts 9-10 and strive to be an encouraging environment for students to read, write, and think. Reading and writing will be taught using the workshop model: collaborative groups, peer centered discussion, literacy groups, and other supportive and engaging activities. A variety of literary works will be explored and students will become familiar with the concepts of audience, purpose, and context. Throughout the year, there will an emphasis on questioning the author’s use of figurative language and literary features and examining how these concepts influence a text. In order to give students a wide scope of experiences as young writers, writing is stressed in multiple forms: self expression, personal memoir, expository, argumentative, persuasive, fiction, creative non-fiction and other genres.
Verbal communication will also be a focus as all students will participate in conversations about literary analysis, literary genres, literary elements, oral traditions, as well as connecting personal experience to the pieces of literature that we read in class. Students will also be able to evaluate text, critique texts, and support an informed opinion in both verbal and written form.
